Women's RE Workshop!
|
Redwood Alliance announced its Women's Renewable Energy Workshop, to be held the weekend of May 1 & 2, 2004. Women will learn about solar power in a supportive atmosphere.
The May 1st workshop will cover the basics, and the May 2nd workshop is for women that want to learn more, or for those that already have some experience with renewable energy. Costs are $20 for Sat. and $30 for Sun. Space is limited, so please call Beth at 707-834-4311 for reservations. The workshops will be held in the Arcata Marsh Commons meeting room, 101 H St. in Arcata, starting promptly at 10 a.m. and going until 4 p.m. Attendees should bring a sack lunch.
The workshop will be taught by Kelly Larson, and experienced workshop leader, and a solar installer working in the Humboldt - Mendocino areas. Kelly has been involved in the field of renewable energy for many years, is an electrical engineer, and has worked with Alternative Energy Engineering in Redway, CA.
Women will learn about residential solar, wind, & hydro power. The workshop will review electrical terminology & concepts such as volts, amps, watts, loads, & RE equipment, and will also discuss RE system design, equipment selection, safety, & tool use.
According to workshop leader Kelly Larson, We are very excited about this workshop. The point is to empower women to learn about and get involved with renewable energy to increase the use of solar in the world.
In addition to sponsorship by Redwood Alliance, the workshop is being supported by the North Coast Co-Op, which sponsors many great events in our community, and Alternative Energy Engineering, a Redway distributor of renewable energy products.
Redwood Alliance spokesperson Michael Welch, who will not be attending the workshop, already gets his electricity from the sun, It gives me a strong sense of security and freedom to not be tied to the utilities, and we want to pass this on to women and the public. Redwood Alliance is installing a solar-electric system on its office building in Arcata, which should be up and running in June.
According to Welch, We are here to educate folks about the benefits of renewable energy as an alternative to nuclear and fossil fuel. Just imagine turning on your light switch and gaining the satisfaction that in doing so, you are not contributing to the worlds environmental problems. Remember the old, 70s bumper sticker, Solar Employs, Nuclear Destroys.
Welch continued, The financial cost of solar electricity panels and other components has been falling rapidly recently, and our educational effort is meant to get people ready for when the price is low enough to equal that of the utilities' poison power.
Reserve your place in the workshops by calling Beth at 707-834-4311. For further information call Redwood Alliance at 707-822-7884, PO Box 293 Arcata, CA 95518. You can email them at info@redwoodalliance.org or go to their web site at www.redwoodalliance.org.
